In Fall 2003, the Tennessee Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics established the Tennessee Pediatric Society Foundation to implement and carry out programs that benefit the health, safety, and well-being of Tennessee's children.
Breastfeeding Is Best
Developed by Dr. Margreete Johnston, this project printed 40 signs promoting freastfeeding. These signs are currently posted in 40 buses in the Nashville Metro Bus Transit System.
Weight Management Scholarship Program
The Weight Management Scholarship Program, funded through a grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation provided scholarships for overweight children of lower and middle income families in the Nashville area, allowing them to participate in the Fitwize 4 Kids weight management program.
Health In Progress - Middle School Walk/Run Program
The goal of this program is to improve the long-term health of children by promoting walking and running as lifelong exercise. This Walk/Run program combines an exercise program with health and safety education and is designed for children aged 10 to 15. Any parent, school, or other organization can implement the program. Please visit the HIP website for downloadable forms and educational materials at http://www.healthinprogress.com/. Health In Progress (HIP) is funded by a grant from BlueCross BlueShield Community Trust. What is Hip? (pdf)
Bicycle Helmet Safety Initiative
This program has produced an educational brochure about the importance of wearing a helmet while biking. The brochure includes information about the Tennessee law, statistics on head injuries in children due to biking accidents, and information for ordering helmets at a significantly reduced price. Download the Bike Helmet Brochure (pdf).
Vitamin D Campaign
This program addressed the prevention of nutritional rickets in infants and children in Tennessee. The goal was to provide tools to pediatricians to help educate parents about adequate Vitamin D intake. The Foundation provided an informational brochure and poster free of charge to pediatricians, hospital newborn nursery directors, and WIC nutritionists.
