The Pediatric Practice Managers’ Network Conference was a day-long event that provided valuable educational sessions conducted in a comfortable setting where office staff from pediatric practices across Tennessee were able to learn and network with one another.

The Pediatric Practice Managers’ Network

The Pediatric Practice Managers’ Network (PMN) provides TNAAP members’ practice managers with a professional network of colleagues to discuss crucial management issues, share pertinent experiences, increase knowledge, and improve their management skills in order to strengthen the practices in which they work. PMN conferences consist of multiple sessions with expert presenters, peer-led workshops, networking opportunities, and group discussions.

8:30 – 9:45 am: Morning Session: Negotiation Primer
Presented by Randy Cook of SVMIC. This session is a practical “How To” for medical practice managers to improve their contract negotiation skill level. It will include discussions on preparing for negotiation, active listening, tricks of the trade, and success stories.

9:45 – 10:00am: Break. Exhibits open.

10:00 – 10:45 am: Morning Session: Vaccine Updates
Presented by Dr. Kelly L. Moore, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the TN State Immunization Program. This session will cover new vaccine requirements, the new school certificate and discuss results of the 2009 24-month-old survey.

10:55 – 11:40 am: Morning Session: Regional Extension Center and Stimulus Money
Presented by Jennifer McAnally, Director of the Tennessee Regional Extension Center, a division of QSource. Learn the purpose and services of the Regional Extension Centers and discover the meaningful use criteria for achieving the Medicaid incentives specific to Tennessee.

11:40 - 12:30 pm: Buffet lunch for attendees and sponsors. Exhibits open.

12:45 – 1:45 pm: Afternoon Keynote Session: Show Me the Money!
Presented by Rhonda Sides, CPA/ABV, CVA CFF, Crosslin & Associates. This session will cover facets of using new technology to generate much-needed additional revenue to your practice, marketing suggestions to use new technology and proven methods of broadening your reach to existing and new patients and other customers. Focus will also be on those ever-challenging issues of practicing the basics: re-evaluating your practice’s operations for waste, inefficiency, incompetencies and looking for improvements in all areas to make a positive impact on the bottom line.

Afternoon Breakout Session (Choose one of the two options listed below:)

2:00 – 3:00 pm: Option 1: Building a Team Culture
Presented by Jim Usry. Managing Partner, Advanced Team Concepts. This session will offer attendees the opportunity to have an open discussion with other practice managers from across the state to share ideas, thoughts or issues you may be experiencing. Mr. Usry will serve as the session facilitator to help generate a productive, beneficial and helpful conversation along with solid solutions and plans to Build a Team Culture in your practice.

2:00 – 3:00 pm: Option 2: Essential Security Practices for Healthcare Businesses
Presented by Fred Scholl, Monarch Information Networks. This session will give practice managers information to plan and implement the best business solutions in areas such as developing security strategy, policy, awareness programs, implementing effective and efficient security controls and remidiating information security compliance gaps.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Randy Cook: Mr. Cook is a Senior Medical Practice Consultant at State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company. Randy’s focus in this role is managed care which allows him to continue his career-long desire to help physicians navigate through the health care market place. Randy is formerly the CEO of Meritus, LLC. Randy began his health care career as mental health counselor. He made the shift from provider to management when he began working for John Deere Health Care in 1985, managing HMO operations. Randy was with John Deere for over 12 years managing 13 different IPAs and HMO operation sites. Randy spent two years as VP of Managed Care for the Kentucky Division of Columbia/HCA. Randy left Columbia to join a start-up physician practice management company, UniPhy, as a founder. During his tenure at UniPhy Randy led in the development of several innovative analytical tools used by physician practices to improve payer reimbursements and contracting. These skills and experience are accessible today through his role at SVMIC. Randy lives in the Nashville TN area. He has a bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman College and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Tennessee. Randy is a Certified Medical Practice Executive and a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executives.

Jennifer McAnally: Ms. McAnally is the Director of tnREC, the Tennessee Regional Extension Center, a division of QSource. She has worked with both large and small physician practices for more than 20 years. Ms. McAnally has earned her B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Masters of Health Informatics and Information Management from the University of Tennessee.  She also holds dual certifications as a Certified Professional in Electronic Health Records (CPEHR.), as well as a Certified Professional in Health Information Technology (CPHIT).

Kelly L Moore:  Dr. Moore is the Medical Director of the State Immunization Program at the Tennessee Department of Health, where she has served since 2004. She holds a medical degree from Vanderbilt University and Master's of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. After completing her pediatric internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, she joined the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service and completed the CDC's Preventive Medicine Residency before becoming board-certified as a specialist in preventive medicine and public health. She developed Tennessee's new immunization rules for daycare, school and college and the design of the new 2010 immunization certificate.

Rhonda W. Sides: Ms. Sides is the Principal for Healthcare Services and Business Valuation and Litigation Support Services for Crosslin & Associates and for STAT Solutions. Proficient in management issues of many types of healthcare entities, Rhonda specializes in physician practice management issues, HIPAA compliance, Stark compliance and physician compensation issues, entity contracts, practice valuations, cost accounting, operational assessments, accounts receivable, and financial feasibility issues related to group and integrated delivery system development. She lectures nationally for various healthcare and financial organizations regarding the issues of combining the practicality of accounting with the needs of healthcare practice management. Rhonda has been named as one of Middle Tennessee’s top healthcare executives for three years in Nashville Business Journal’s Healthcare 100 for 2002, 2003, and 2006 and also recognized for BizWomen profile in 2005 and Healthcare Hero in 2007.

Fred Scholl: Mr. Scholl is the Chief Information Security Officer/ Chief Information Risk Officer for Monarch Information Networks. Expertise includes a broad  including information security program leadership, information security program management and information security compliance programs.  He has received 13 US Patents regarding network technology and fiber optics, written 100+ publications and delivered numerous presentations on information security, privacy, data forensics, applications performance, and data communications to Fortune 500 companies around the world. Mr. Scholl received a Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Jim Usry: Mr. Usry is a founding partner of Advanced Team Concepts. He has over 30 years experience in the healthcare field. His broad range of assignments include sales management, marketing, managed care account management, and training for Merck & Co, Inc. He has attended multiple training programs on the management of conflict in healthcare and has personally managed conflict with employee and management teams. Jim brings a passion to assisting teams in improving performance through the development of effective interpersonal skills. He is certified to deliver conflict management programs through the Center for Conflict Dynamics at Eckerd College and has completed Rule 31 mediation training for Tennessee.  Jim has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and an MBA from Louisiana State University
