Advocacy
- Increase your knowledge of and participation in legislative and advocacy activities at the state level.
- Have a voice in the legislative arenas to influence the quality of pediatric practice and the welfare of children in Tennessee.
- Have the opportunity to visit the state and federal legislatures with TNAAP and AAP professional lobbyists.
- Interact with policy-makers and other key stakeholders.
- Participate in various issues when we are awarded grants and other opportunities for pediatric champions.
Education
- Receive regional, group and one-on-one education on coding, EPSDT and developmental/behavioral screenings (free).
- Receive Chapter newsletters, including The Tennessee Pediatrician, and The Prevention and Intervention News, our newest publication providing
information for the practicing pediatrician on the latest in best practices, referral resources and state policy.
- Access the Chapter website for up-to-date pertinent information.
- Earn CME credit at annual conferences on significant topics in pediatric care.
Leadership
- Participate in chapter committees, task forces, coalition efforts, and projects in your areas of interest.
- Shape the future of our organization.
- Represent pediatricians across the state in government, community, steering panels and other collaborative efforts.
Networking
- Network with other pediatricians who have similar interests.
- Improve Chapter membership participation on national and state AAP affairs.
What has your Chapter done lately?
- Was one of 5 AAP Chapters to receive the Healthy People 2010 grant regarding tobacco cessation research this year.
- Designed a brochure to discourage underage drinking.
- Expanded our medical home care management pilot project.
- Entered into a new contract with the TN Early Intervention Service to assist with our developmental screening program (START).
- Resigned all EPSDT educational materials, including our car seat safety and bike helmet safety brochure, with the most current recommendations and a new look consistent with our website and other materials.
- Revamped our Pediatric Council to work with commercial payors.
- Implemented pilot program for FY08 and FY09 to increase early diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders for children in TN.
- Won the Best Website and Best Newsletters Awards last year from the TN Society of Association Executives.
- Redesigned logo, brochure and website for our Foundation (TN Pediatric Society Foundation).
- Expanded to 7 Chapter staff in order to carry out chapter initiatives that support the interests of pediatricians and children.
- One of 5 AAP Chapters to receive a $20,000 grant in 2007 for an oral health pilot program in upper East TN.
- Conducted EPSDT, developmental/behavioral screening and pediatric coding educational programs and developed resource materials for pediatricians and office staff, as well as family physicians, residents, and NP and PA students, to help improve access to preventive care for children on TennCare.
- Regularly meet with the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination, department Commissioners, and TennCare Bureau Directors regarding TennCare problems and solutions.
- Hired a contract lobbyist to support the executive director on legislative issues.
- Established the Tennessee Pediatric Society Foundation, enabling the Chapter to qualify for and expand programs that improve children’s health and welfare in Tennessee, including but not limited to a bicycle helmet safety campaign, a vitamin D/rickets educational campaign, exercise programs for school-age children, and a breastfeeding ad campaign on Nashville public buses.
- Launched Methamphetamine Awareness Campaign in TN with Partnership for Drug Free America.
- Revamped a Young Physicians Committee to focus on the needs of those just entering practice.
- Regularly trained pediatric residents on legislative advocacy and offer internships to fulfill advocacy requirements.
- Assisted with the passage of laws dealing with car seat safety, school nutrition, graduated drivers licensing, expansion of the bike helmet law, expansion of the seat belt requirement, day care reform and TennCare reform measures.
- Established a statewide Pediatric Practice Managers' Network and have held educational meetings annually for 7 years.
- Past award recipient of 4 Excellence Awards by the TN Society of Association Executives (for coding seminars, our developmental screening trainings, a CME meeting and our bike helmet education campaign) and the AAP Outstanding Large Chapter Award.
