Chapter begins with polio as the unifying effort

1966 - 67

James Hughes, MD is president of American Academy of Pediatrics

1968 - 73

President: George Lovejoy, MD
  • Medicaid
  • Government involvement in practice of medicine begins

1974 - 76

President: Felix Line, MD
  • Committees formed
  • Car seat effort began

1977 - 80

President: Walton Harrison, MD
  • AAP Chapter Forum begins
  • Car Seat law - first state to pass (1977)

1980 - 83

President: George Zirkle, MD (also president of TMA)
  • "First Ride . . . A Safe Ride"
  • Won AAP Outstanding Chapter Award (1982)

1983 - 86

President: Luthur Beazley, MD
  • Bylaws written
  • Medical Home for Children
  • Medical Passport for Children
  • Tennessee Chapter of AAP and Tennessee Pediatric Society merged

1986 - 89

President: Bobby Higgs, MD
  • EPSDT made it possible for us to accept Medicaid
  • Creation of Awards

1989 - 92

President: Hays Mitchell, MD (also Chair of TMA Board of Trustees)
  • Legislative committee created
  • "Medical Home Rosters" of physicians in 40 counties to see families and children (project in conjunction with the TMA)
  • Won Outstanding Chapter Award (1991)

1992 - 95

President: Harold Vann, MD
  • Begin to increase profile in government as voice for children
  • Bike Helmet Law
  • TennCare begins - (1/1/94)
  • First Executive Director - (2/1/94)

1995 - 98

President: Russell Chesney, MD (1st Academician President)
  • Lobbyist presence on the Hill (1995)- Gene Caldwell, Catherine Fenner
  • First annual planning retreat (1996)
  • Annual pediatric hotlines began
  • "48 Hours Discharge" effort

1998 - 99

President: Iris Snider, MD (1st Female President)
  • Graduated drivers license effort
  • Associate membership category created for pediatric dentists
  • Medical students begin to get involved
  • Launch program involving residents in legislative advocacy

2000 - 01

President: Joe Lentz, MD
  • TNAAP web site launched
  • Increase staff from 1 FTE to 3 FTE:-- Hire Project Coordinator
  • Granted a contract with Bureau of TennCare; hire EPSDT Coordinator
  • Bicycle helmet education campaign
  • 2001- Won Outstanding Chapter Award

2002 - 03

President: John Ring, MD
  • Launched Pediatric Practice Managers' Network
  • Launched Pediatricians' Open Forum meetings
  • Increased staff adding Coding Educator and part-time Financial Manager

2004 - 05

President: David Kalwinsky, MD
  • Launched Developmental/Behavioral Screening Trainings, increasing staff to 5.5 FTE
  • Launched Methamphetamine Awareness public relations campaign with Partnership for Drug Free America
  • Established the Tennessee Pediatric Society Foundation

2006 - 07

President: Quentin Humberd, MD
  • Increased number of START trainers and took it nationally
  • Increased START to include Autism pilot project
  • Strengthened and built the TN Pediatric Society Foundation to include more Board members and projects such as the Oral Health Initiative, Health in Progress, and Healthy Weight Management

2008 - 09

President: John Hill, MD
  • Released new marketing pieces, including Foundation logo and brochure and website, new TNAAP website, revised Tennessee Pediatrician newsletter, and new Prevention & Intervention News newsletter
  • Young Physician Committee and Membership Committee re-launched
  • Pediatric Council re-launched to address commercial payors
  • Medical Home case management project
